I VOLUNTEER BECAUSE… I know how it feels to be different

This is Chris’ testimonial. Christ is a Senior Project Worker at Brighton YMCA. Chris gave us the perspective of a staff member who has consistently volunteered for the past 15 years.

‘We often think clients need to volunteer to show purposeful activity when they want to move on to less supported accommodation. At Brighton YMCA we have many staff who also volunteer in the community.’

‘I have been a volunteer at Allsorts Youth Project for 15 years. Allsorts is a drop in for LGBTU young people up to the age of 25. The U in LGBTU stands for unsure and this is core to the work of the charity.’

‘I volunteer because as a young person I was very unsure of my sexuality and future. I remember what it was like to be at school and not knowing or understanding why I was different to others.’

‘Volunteering is a chance for us all to put something back into that community that helped us in our journey through life. We all have a different obstacle on the way. For some it could be drugs, alcohol, sexual health, mental health, disability, homelessness – just to name a few.’

‘Volunteering can help us  help ourselves, as much as it helps the community.’
